EFCC says it caught Benue APC guber candidate with a bag full of vote-buying cash

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday recovered heavy bags of cash belonging to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Emmanuel Jime, along North Bank in Makurdi. In the process, the detectives on patrol were violently attacked with their vehicles smashed.

“A man was caught with large bags containing lots of money. While trying to arrest him, officers of the Commission were attacked and vehicles vandalised. Information gathered confirms that the money belongs to Emmanuel Jimeh, the gubernatorial candidate of the APC in Benue State,” the EFCC said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

Jime’s response: The APC candidate said in a statement by his spokesman, Joe Abuku that he has no links with the money as he left the area immediately after voting. The reports, he said were “flat out incorrect.”

“We are not aware of any arrest or incident as described in these reports,” he told online newspaper, Premium Times.

What next?: It is time for officials in charge to pay more than lip service to this issue. If the EFCC is convinced about Jime’s culpability, then they should make an arrest and charge him according to the prescription of the Electoral Act which he has clearly violated if proven to be behind the vote buying incident.
