Several civilians are feared dead and others missing after Boko Haram insurgents attacked Ran in Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno State on Monday.
Many soldiers have also been reported missing in separate attacks on their formations in Ngala and Mafa Local Government Areas of the state at the weekend.
Backstory: The insurgents were said to have stormed Ran in the early hours of Monday.
A local source is reported saying the attackers operated unchallenged because the troops had withdrawn to Ngala.
“Thousands of civilians are helpless in Rann, the Boko Haram terrorists came this morning and killed many people.”
The same source added that “The Multinational Joint Tasks Force(MJTF) had moved out of town, but Nigerian troops were expected before the attackers came yesterday morning.”
In addition to the attacks on civilians, a military base in Lomani, Mafa Local Government Area, was also attacked where soldiers were reportedly killed. A security source reported that at least five soldiers were killed in Lomani, and another source said at least 12 troops were killed in Alajiri.
The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole had visited the scenes, but there was no official statement on the attacks.
Bottom Line: It seems that as the nation continues its preoccupation with the forthcoming elections, Boko Haram is taking advantage of the diversion to wreak more havoc in the Northeast. What’s worse is that the reporting on the situation is not as prominent as talks about the election, leaving the victims of this attack disadvantaged, unheard and at the mercy of the terrorists.
