The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has informed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of its decision to accept the nominated governorship candidate submitted by the Adebayo Dayo led executive of the party in Ogun State. That executive is loyal to Senator Buruji Kashamu (Ogun East), who has been expelled by the party’s national executive.
Backstory: In a letter to the leadership of the PDP, the commission stated that it had received the list of candidates for the governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections from the Dayo executive.
PDP national exco has rejected INEC’s decision. “If INEC claimed that it collected any list outside what the national secretariat of PDP submitted to it, it is a huge compromise. They acknowledged all the names that we submitted to them. So, it is totally strange, unknown to the rules and unknown to the PDP that INEC is claiming that it has another list. We are not aware,” the party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan said.
Why INEC recognised the factional candidates: Because three different court rulings had ordered it to recognize the Adebayo Dayo faction. “The Commission hereby notes the decisions of the Federal High Court in the above-referred cases and will publish the lists of candidates submitted by the Adebayo Dayo led State Executive Committee of Ogun State pursuant to the Orders of the Federal High Court until they are set aside,” the INEC acting Secretary, Okechukwu Ndeche, said in a statement.
Response by Adebayo Dayo, the court recognised state chairman of the party: “The decision of INEC is in conformity with established norms and standards… It is in the interest of democracy and the course of justice for everybody to obey court decisions… This was a family dispute that was allowed to fester for too long because of the selfish interests of a few powerful people. But we thank God that the judiciary has again proven to be the last hope of the common man.”
Bottom Line: Ordinarily, chaotic news like this for the PDP ought to be capitalised upon by the APC. However the APC is itself in chaos. The national exco of the party recognises Dapo Abiodun as the candidate of the party, and has submitted his name to INEC. However a faction loyal to the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has a preferred candidate, Akinlade. The rejection of the governor’s candidate has led to speculations that he may dump the APC.
