The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has denied allegations that its Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru, made a cash transfer to President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation in support of the media and publicity of Buhari’s 2019 re-election campaigns.
In a statement signed by the NNPC Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndu Ughamadu, the allegation against Baru is false and goes against the organization’s transparency and accountability.
- Said the allegation is a “politically induced hallucination which has found accommodation in the subconscious of some mischievous political actors intent on dragging the corporation and its GMD into the arena of partisan political tussle.”
Bottom line: Baru has had a previous allegation of illegal activity, particularly, the award of US$25 billion worth contracts which did not follow due process. That allegation was brought by a senior member of this government, Ibe Kachikwu, who is the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources. However, there has been no proper investigation into the matter.
The latest accusation is expected to follow the same route. As minister of petroleum resources, the NNPC is under the direct supervision of President Muhammadu Buhari, but it has been business as usual, and there has been no substantial reforms of the agency since 2015.
