A senator of the federal republic, Dino Melaye, reportedly jumped out of a moving police vehicle on Tuesday in order to evade arrest and arraignment by the police.
Today, his colleagues adjourned plenary in order to go visit him in the hospital with no one mentioning the fact that he had acted as though he was above the law which they swore to defend.
Melaye is currently at the intensive care unit of the National Hospital, Abuja.
Senators took turns to criticize the police for supposedly infringing on his rights.
Senator Sam Anyanwu said Melaye was treated as a common criminal, while Senator Ibrahim Gobir said the Kogi lawmaker is “being deprived of his fundamental human rights. This could happen to all of us some day.” For Senator Adamu Aliero, the fact that “this can happen to a serving senator means democracy is being rubbished.”
Others who spoke include Senators Shehu Sani, Isah Misau, Joshua Lidani and Chukwuma Utazi.
Subsequently, the senate adjourned plenary in order for senators led by senate president Bukola Saraki to visit Melaye in solidarity.
