The state assemblies in two of Nigeria’s biggest states did not participate in constitution amendment

According to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, both Lagos and Rivers States did not participate in the Constitution amendment review.

On Thursday, 34 state assemblies submitted their resolutions on the constitution amendment process. But there were no resolutions from those two states.

Saraki commended the other 34 states which submitted their resolutions.

“I had thought this exercise would have ensured that all states participated fully. The non-participation of Lagos and Rivers states is disappointing. And I hope that as we move ahead, Lagos and Rivers will take a different approach. This idea of bullying is not good for us and for our democracy,” he said.

It is unclear why the states did not participate. The spokesman of the Lagos assembly did not respond to a mail on the matter, while an aide of the senate president Bamikola Omisore, said he did not know why.

Lagos and Rivers are two of the country’s largest states in terms of population and economic strength. Whereas the South West state is controlled by the All progressives Congress (APC), the South South state is controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
