Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State is accusing a federal cabinet minister – Heineken Lokpobiri of involvement in the recent wave of violence that has swept through Bayelsa state.
The Bayelsa state Governor released a statement accusing Lokpobiri the agriculture minister of state following reports of the killing of four soldiers in a clash with militants in Toru-Ndoro, a community in Ekeremor local government of Bayelsa state.
Some militants were reported dead as well.
The soldiers of the Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) tried to dislodge the militants in their stronghold and were met with the militants firepower. According to the Ijaw Youth Council which condemned the act, one of the soldiers was beheaded and the militants celebrated with it.
“Cutting the head of a human being and celebrating with it is an abomination and we condemn it. We call on our community leaders and rulers to stop celebrating criminals. I am worried that if the military doesn’t succeed in apprehending the young man and his boys, their return will be deadly,” the statement said.
Why It Matters
Governor Dickson has alleged that the Ekeremor militants led by the dreaded *Peregbakumo Oyawerikumo aka Karowei, who has been arrested for the death of the soldiers are being equipped by Buhari’s agriculture minister of state, Lokpobiri.
He said it was part of a larger ploy by the opposition to make the state ungovernable and he said he is in possession of some kind of evidence.
Dickson said in the statement:
“I have issued statements before calling on the President of the Federal Republic òf Nigeria to call his party leaders in this state to order, especially his Minister for State, Heineken Lokpobiri, Who is the one that has armed and equipped the people that have subjected communities to this level of insecurity.
“All the guns and equipment they have been using to terrorize the people are provided by Lokpobiri. I have evidence that by the 3rd of January, this Kareowei and his killers from Ekeremor were celebrating together.
“We expect the FG which is in charge of the national security apparatus, I don’t believe that the president is aware, and I have issued a statement to that effect that he should take charge, these guys are working with some elements in Abuja.”
Footnote: Peregbakumo Oyawerikumo aka Karowei is reportedly the mastermind of the kidnap of four British Medical Missionaries in Delta State in 2017. According to news reports, he was killed in a bid to escape when he led the OPDS troops to his camp.
