Once again, Gov. Rochas Okorocha is in the news for an action that boggles the mind. The announcement that his younger sister, Ogechi Ololo, had been named Commissioner of Happiness and Couples Fulfillment was greeted with shock and incredulity by most Nigerians.
But there was more shock to come: The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Sam Onwuemeodo, said on Wednesday that the new ministry is actually the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment, not the Ministry of Happiness and Couples Fulfillment as earlier announced.
It was a typo! According to the governor’s Spokesman, the earlier name was a “typographic error.”
“There was a typographic error in the first statement issued on the swearing in of the new commissioners. The word ‘Couple’ was inadvertently written, instead of the word ‘Purpose,’ we regret that,” Onwuemeodo said.
Why always typo? This is the second time in a week that the governor and his team are blaming embarrassing actions on typographical errors.
Last week, the governor was supposed to present the state’s proposed budget for 2018 before the state assembly but lawmakers decided to boycott the event, in a huge embarrassment to the government and invited guests who were already seated at the assembly for the speech.
The governor’s spokesman subsequently put out this incredible statement: “With utmost regret, we wish to inform the public that the announced presentation of the 2018 budget to the state House of Assembly by the Governor, Rochas Okorocha, fixed for Tuesday (yesterday) could no longer hold, owing largely to disturbing discrepancies discovered in the budget speech. A new date for the budget presentation will as usual be made public.”
Thereafter, in a coordinated move, the Chairman of the Imo Assembly Committee on Information, Kennedy Ibeh, said the postponement was due to “typographical error and pagination of the budget speech.”
Exactly a week later, another “typo” in which “couple” took the place of “purpose” has embarrassed the state government again.
So it is likely one of three things:
1. Gov. Okorocha has a terribly incompetent team which cannot be trusted to get the most basic things right to the detriment of the state’s progress.
2. Gov. Okorocha has a terribly mischievous team working to sabotage his administration and make a fool of their boss in the eyes of the public.
3. Gov. Okorocha himself is both incompetent and mischievous – and so uninventive that his go-to excuse whenever his actions ridicule him before the public is to blame a “typographical error.”
Anyway, here’s how the government defended its decision to establish the new ministry:
“The real essence of life is to be happy and to fulfil one’s purpose in life; Government officials are elected to address this.
“Happiness and Purpose Fulfilment Ministry therefore, is established for the lost time to correct the policy framework to guide ministries and departments on what they must do to guarantee the citizens’ happiness and contribute better to the society.
“This is the very reason people elect their leaders: to guarantee their happiness and purpose fulfillment. A great leader therefore, is one who provides happiness to the people.”
