Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is ineligible to vote at the much anticipated national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which holds on Saturday, December 9th.
Why Atiku cannot vote:
The former VP decamped to the PDP this week, causing excitement among the ranks of the opposition but voting so soon after his defection will not be in conformity with the party’s constitution, according to the National publicity secretary of the party, Dayo Adeyeye.
‘All you need to do is pick up the constitution of the party and see whether Atiku is qualified to vote or not. First of all, I can tell you that we are happy with Atiku coming back to the PDP. It is very exciting for all of us. It is a good omen to everybody in the PDP. He was one of the founding fathers, one of those who built this party and he is coming back home. His room was never occupied, so we have opened it for him. He will be part of this convention. He will even make a speech at the convention but he may not be voting at the convention.” Adeyeye said.
Unless he is given a waiver by the National Working committee, Atiku is not eligible to vote for a period of at least one year. That waiver is likely going to come at some point but with Adeyeye’s comments, it may only happen after the convention.
