Atiku jumps on the #EndSARS bandwagon; Buhari maintains silence

The official position in Aso Rock so far to the online protest by young Nigerians over the unrestrained bullying, extortion and victimization by officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been silence.

Thousands of Nigerians have taken to social media to share worrying stories of their ordeals in the hands of SARS officials, yet no official in the government has deemed it fit to respond 24 hours later. The social media handles of the president, vice president, and spokespersons of the government have not acknowledged the uproar. VP Osinbajo’s Twitter handle is noteworthy for its pinned tweet which congratulates two young entertainers, Wizkid and Davido for their “hardwork and enterprise”. Campaigners in the #EndSARS movement have pointed out that the hardwork and enterprise of other young people tend to be criminalized by SARS officials who bully youths they find with laptops.

A contender for the presidency in 2019 and former vice president Atiku Abubakar has however spoken up in support of the protesting youths. He called on the police to take the complaints seriously. So far, there has been no response from the police force.
