As expected from a wedding involving the first daughter of Nigeria’s senate president Bukola Saraki, dignitaries converged on the Eko Hotels venue to witness the union. From businessmen like Aliko Dangote to monarchs like the Oba of Lagos, the wedding comprised of the who-is-who of society.
The mix of politicians who attended the wedding between Oluwatosin Saraki and Adeniyi Olukoya, was an interesting one.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the number two man in an executive arm which has fought and even prosecuted Saraki in just two years of the administration.
Also present was chief of staff to Pres. Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo who in January 2016 wrote a letter to Saraki accusing the National Assembly of corruption, impunity, greed and of repeatedly breaking the nation’s laws.
“Mr. President of the Senate,” Obasanjo wrote, “you know that your emolument which the Commission had recommended for you takes care of all your legitimate requirements: basic salary, car, housing, staff, constituency allowance. Although the constituency allowance is paid to all members of the National Assembly, many of them have no constituency offices which the allowance is partly meant to cater for. And yet other allowances and payments have been added by the National Assembly for the National Assembly members’ emoluments. Surely, strictly speaking, it is unconstitutional. There is no valid argument for this except to see it for what it is – law-breaking and impunity by lawmakers. The lawmakers can return to the path of honour, distinguishness, sensitivity and responsibility.”
Bola Tinubu was there as well despite the well documented clashes between both men since the APC won the 2015 national elections.
Former PDP chairman, Ali Modu-Sheriff whose dogged hold on the position despite internal opposition led to a protracted crisis within the opposition PDP was also present.
Of course there were expected faces as well, including Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other lawmakers.
