The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Monday Igbuya, representing Sapele Constituency, has been impeached over allegations of financial misappropriation, high-handedness, incompetence and unacceptable leadership style.
Igbuya was removed and suspended for three months on Thursday, at plenary presided by the Deputy Speaker, Friday Asanebi.
The motion for the impeachment of the speaker was moved by Mr. Johnson Erijo (Isoko South II) and seconded by Peter Onwusanyo (Oshimili South), and 22 members out of the 29 members of the House supported Mr. Igbuya’s removal.
Mr. Igbuya was replaced with Sheriff Oborevwori (Okpe Constituency)
Mr. Oborevwori during his acceptance speech, promised to adhere to the rules of the House, accord every member their due respect, ensure the integrity of the assembly is not eroded, and called for support of members.
He, without delay, announced the dissolution of all standing committees of the House.
Mr Igbuya was impeached alongside the Majority Leader, Tim Owhofere, who was suspended indefinitely and replaced by Johnson Erijo.
At the end of the plenary session, the new Speaker and other members proceeded to the Government House to intimate the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, of the new changes in the house leadership.
During the meeting, the State Governor persuaded the lawmakers to annul the decision, but the lawmakers vowed not to rescind the removal of the officers.
The meeting was attended by the impeached speaker, Igbuya, Delta State Deputy Governor , Deacon Kingsley Otuaro, and some top leaders of the
Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
