On Monday, while carrying out a general inspection of staff at the Rivers state headquarters of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Port Harcourt, the state commander, Andrew Kumapayi, decided to cut the hair of female officials which purportedly contravened the requirements of the service.
The female road marshals were reportedly accused of sporting long hairs which consequently made it difficult for their caps to fit on their heads.
Photos of Kumapayi’s dehumanising shaving of the women’s hair went viral and most Nigerians were outraged at his overreach.
The FRSC has now moved against the Commander.
Bisi Kazeem, FRSC’s head of media and strategy, on Tuesday, told journalists that the action of Kumapayi and other officers involved was outside the mandate of the commission. Kazeem said that the officials have now been recalled and appropriate sanctions will be meted out after investigations.
