Ondo assembly impeaches its first female speaker

The Speaker Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, and her deputy have been suspended. Akindele, the first female Speaker in the state was elected in on May 27, 2015 following the sudden death of the former speaker Samuel Adesina.

Akindele, is a Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) lawmaker representing Okitipupa, in the Southern District of the state.

Also impeached was the Deputy Speaker, Fatai Olotu from Akoko division in the Northern District of the state.

The duo were suspended amidst allegations of illegally withdrawing N15 million from the Assembly’s account,  and also not carrying the house along.

Some members of the Assembly are denouncing the suspension, insisting that the 14 members who allegedly endorsed her suspension were not enough to form a house quorum in a 26 man assembly.

The speaker had earlier been suspended but was later reinstated after Governor  Segun Mimiko’s intervention.

Coker Malachi representing Ilaje 1 state constituency was elected as the new Speaker, and Ayo Arowele representing Owo constituency was also elected as Deputy Speaker.
