According to Gambia State Television, the Gambia’s National Assembly has extended the tenure of President Yahya Jammeh for three months, this followed on the heels of Jammeh’s declaration of a 90-day State of Emergency on Tuesday.
Jammeh, who has ruled the Gambia for the past 22 years had vowed not to hand over power to President-elect, Adama Barrow, whose inauguration was slated for 19th January.
He had initially accepted the results and congratulated Barrow but later reversed his decision a week later, claiming irregularities.
ECOWAS has given Jammeh till January 19th midnight to hand over or be forcefully shown the way out. Nigeria has reportedly sent a warship and troops to neighbouring Senegal to enforce the decision if he refuses to hand over to the President-elect tomorrow.
