David Mark contributes nothing in the senate, but this is what his party thinks of him

David Mark does not make any contribution in the senate. He does not even speak at all. He sits on the back benches. He comes in after the senate president and leaves before the senate president. He turned down the opportunity to chair any senate committee. In other words, he is simply occupying space and swallowing resources.

Understandably, many people were pleased when the court of appeal nullified his election on Saturday for being fraudulent and ordered a fresh poll within 90 days. Considering how Mark has been acting like he is no longer interested in the job since he lost the senate president seat, one would have thought that he would simply concede and turn down the opportunity of contesting again. But the five-term senator is hungry to remain in the senate.

Of course, his party, the Peoples Democratic Party supports him. “David Mark has made significant contributions in growing and stabilizing the nation’s democracy through his mature, responsible and patriotic leadership of the Senate,” said PDP spokesman, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Monday. “He is an asset to Nigeria.”

To rub salt to the wound of the people of Benue South whose senator just makes up the numbers in the senate, the PDP said Mark was providing “effective and result-oriented representation in the Senate.”

The party said that it is sure Mark will win the rerun poll whenever INEC decides to conduct it. The PDP statement also condemned the ruling which ousted Mark, describing it as “inexplicable”.

“…All evidence pointed to Mr. Mark’s victory as upheld by the lower tribunal”, the party said, and concluded that Mark’s loss at the court was yet another evidence of the APC’s dangerous interference in the judiciary.
